This is a book that I was given to read by my therapist as part of ‘Exposure to Painful Emotions’ work. This book was chosen as the content is very close to my own experiences and I could therefore identify with much of it. I had to read the book and underline anything that I felt I could relate to and then rate my emotional reaction out of 10. There were parts that caused me a great deal of distress, one sentence in particular ‘destroyed’ me and the emotions I felt were intense and lasted for about half an hour. This may not seem like a very long time, but at this time I was so adept at blocking my emotions that I often only felt anything for a couple of seconds at the most. This work was seen to be a massive turning point in my recovery and a breakthrough with my treatment.
This was part of my DBT homework – to create an advert promoting ‘feeling’. This was back in the day when blocked all of my emotions. It kind of looks like a child made it, but I like it.
This is an example of a typical DBT Diary card. On the front is where you would rate your mood each day, and whether you did any of your target behaviours. On the back is the list of skills you learn throughout the course of treatment. I was pretty rubbish at filling these out.
Next up, some pages of ‘The Secret Life of Bees’. You can see where I have underlined sections that caused an emotional reaction.
Out of the entire book, this was the passage that completely destroyed me.
That’ll do on the book for now. Some nice pictures to follow….
